This is the Superpower Radio Show, with your hosts Brenda Major and Mia Dawson. Today’s episode features a very special guest, Debra Vines, of The Answer INC, an Autism Awareness & Support Agency for underserved families in the Chicago area.
Listen to Debra’s journey to advocacy after the diagnosis of her son Jason and her advice to parents who are along a similar journey.
One in 44 American children is believed to be on the autism spectrum, but studies have shown that Black and Brown children, on average, are diagnosed later than White children, and are less likely to access critical assistance, due in part to racial bias and cultural stigma. Debra Vines is working to change all of that. Vines struggled to get support and resources when her son Jason was diagnosed with autism. Now, her nonprofit, The Answer Inc., provides families in underserved areas in and around Chicago with the support, services and community education they need to thrive.
We are always excited to bring you have this opportunity to hear from people who want to build a safe and supportive environment for people who are caretakers of folks with autism and others. We call them Superpowers. We consider autism and other what other people would say are disabilities to be superpowers because of the insight and gifts that they bring to us and that they bring out of those who are supporters, advocates and caregivers.
We are not trained clinicians or diagnosticians; we do not have degrees in autism or the spectrum. The information that you hear on our show is designed to offer strategies, comfort, support, faith, and sometimes a little bit of humor to folks who are impacted by autism.
